Chapter 317: Below the Seventh Gate
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
