They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

“Ashes on the Wind”

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
