Chapter 334: The Second Awakening
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
“The Second Awakening”
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
