They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

“The Long Road North”

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
