Chapter 345: Everything the Fire Left
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
“Everything the Fire Left”
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
