By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

“A Kingdom Remembered”

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
