By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
