Chapter 377: Below the Seventh Gate
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.
“Below the Seventh Gate”
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
