Chapter 390: A Debt Paid in Silence
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
