Chapter 395: No Crown Without Blood

The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

“No Crown Without Blood”

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
