The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
