Chapter 417: Everything the Fire Left
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
