The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

“No Crown Without Blood”

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
