Chapter 425: Below the Seventh Gate
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
