The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. She had never seen a spell apologise before. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

“Ashes on the Wind”

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
