Chapter 443: No Crown Without Blood

The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Quiet Storm3 years ago

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
