By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
