Chapter 473: Below the Seventh Gate
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had never seen a spell apologise before. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
“Below the Seventh Gate”
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
