By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. “No Crown Without Blood”

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
