Chapter 486: A Debt Paid in Silence
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
