They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
