The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. “Below the Seventh Gate”

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
