Chapter 499: The Long Road North
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
