They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

“The Long Road North”

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
