By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She had never seen a spell apologise before. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
