Chapter 531: Ashes on the Wind
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. “Ashes on the Wind”

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
