Chapter 545: Below the Seventh Gate

By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

“Below the Seventh Gate”

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
