Chapter 547: The Long Road North
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.
A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
