Chapter 555: Ashes on the Wind
The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.
“Ashes on the Wind”
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
