It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

Quiet Storm3 years ago

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
