The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

“The Second Awakening”

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
