It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
