Chapter 573: Everything the Fire Left
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.
“Everything the Fire Left”
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
