By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.

“A Kingdom Remembered”

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

She had never seen a spell apologise before. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
