The morning after the ridge, nothing in the camp sat quite where it had been left.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

“Wolves at the Threshold”

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
