The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. She had never seen a spell apologise before. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.

“The Long Road North”

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
