Chapter 621: Everything the Fire Left
They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.
The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She had never seen a spell apologise before. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.
There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
