It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
