Chapter 649: A Kingdom Remembered
It took him the better part of an hour to admit that the map was lying.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
“A Kingdom Remembered”
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
