The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. She had never seen a spell apologise before. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it.

“Everything the Fire Left”

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
