By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She had never seen a spell apologise before.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

“Below the Seventh Gate”

They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
