The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.

Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
