Chapter 742: The Second Awakening
The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
“The Second Awakening”
He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
She had never seen a spell apologise before. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.
Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered.
Comments5
Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
