By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

“Below the Seventh Gate”

The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.

The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
