Chapter 757: A Kingdom Remembered
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.
Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet.
Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
