Chapter 762: A Debt Paid in Silence
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
“A Debt Paid in Silence”
Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.
The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. She had never seen a spell apologise before.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
