The letter arrived without a courier, which was the first of the day’s problems.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Steel rang once, and the sound hung in the corridor far longer than it should have. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him.

He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true.

“Ashes on the Wind”

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge.

Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
