Chapter 791: No Crown Without Blood
By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.
Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.
He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector.
Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. She had never seen a spell apologise before. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it.
Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The contract burned as it was signed, which the guild insisted was traditional. She traded the last of her name for passage and considered it a bargain. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything.
Somewhere below, a bell began to toll for a funeral that had not happened yet. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork.
Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide. Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised.
Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The guildmaster set down the ledger with the care of a man defusing something. Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault.
“No Crown Without Blood”
The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. They buried the sword rather than break it, which told him everything. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.
Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Ren counted three heartbeats before the sigil on the floor answered him. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.
Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.
Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!
Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
