They came down out of the pass in single file, saying nothing worth repeating.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Her shadow reached the far wall a full second before she did. Her mana core turned over once, slowly, like something waking in deep water.

The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial.

Rank meant nothing here; the mountain had never learned to read a badge. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy.

There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them. The messenger was still running when the message stopped being true. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

The blade was unremarkable in every way except the one that mattered. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. Power without a ledger, his master used to say, is simply a landslide.

He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. Every instinct he had spent nine years sharpening told him to run. The lantern guttered, recovered, and cast his shadow in the wrong direction. The beast did not roar. That was the part that frightened him. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

The formation held for eight seconds longer than anyone had promised. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.
