By the time the third bell rang, half the hall had already chosen a side.

Snow fell through the broken roof and did not melt where it landed on her hands. Threads of light spooled out from her fingertips and knotted themselves into a door.

Two of the seven seals were already broken when they reached the vault. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them.

A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom. Magic, he had learned, was mostly bookkeeping performed at knifepoint. The system window blinked into existence, patient as a tax collector. Wind came off the ridge carrying the smell of iron and burnt sugar. He took the stairs two at a time and the consequences three at a time.

He wrote the formula in ash because ink would have remembered it. Nothing in the prophecy had mentioned paperwork. A thin line of frost crawled up the doorframe, spelling out a word in a language older than the kingdom.

He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. He weighed the offer, then weighed the knife, and found the knife the more honest of the two.

The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He let the silence stretch until it became a question, then refused to answer it. The manual had said this would hurt. The manual had been generous.

The old man laughed, and dust fell from the rafters in sympathy. The girl in the mirror moved a fraction late, and smiled a fraction early. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat.

“Ashes on the Wind”

Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does, indifferent to the war beneath it. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath. He had prepared nine arguments and needed none of them. She had never seen a spell apologise before. A hundred eyes opened in the dark, and not one of them blinked.

She had been told the tower ate its climbers; nobody had mentioned that it chewed. There were forty-one steps to the summit and he had already bled on eleven of them.

Dawn arrived reluctantly, the way a witness arrives at a trial. The city held its breath for the length of one long, ugly heartbeat. He had died once already this year, and found the experience overrated. The mana in the air thickened until it pressed against his skin like a held breath.

Called it three chapters ago. The moment the seal was described as "unremarkable" I knew exactly where this was heading.

Genuinely one of the best-paced fights in the whole arc. The eight seconds line landed perfectly.

He dies at the end of the volume and comes back with the sword reforged. Screenshot this.

Reading this at 3am was a mistake and I would make it again. Thanks for the chapter!

Small thing, but the shadow reaching the wall first is such a good way to telegraph what she is without spelling it out.
